There are 3 different models of Riddell NFL helmets used on the field today. The traditional NFL helmets have been the VSR4 model. These helmets have been used for years and are known as NFL Pro Line helmets. The update to the Pro Line helmets are the Revolution NFL helmets. These NFL helmets have the same basic round shape but with some ventilation holes and updated padding. The NFL Speed Helmets are the most updated helmets by Riddell. These NFL helmets have an updated modern Darth Vader look with a raised section on the top of the helmets along with triangular vent holes on the backside of these NFL helmets.

Starting in the 2012 season, Riddell can no longer issue the traditional VSR4 helmets. Due to updated safety features in the Revolution and Speed helmets, only these NFL helmets can be issued to the players. However, if players are already wearing the Pro Line NFL helmets those players may continue to wear those helmets until new NFL helmets are needed by that player.
